Part One

Question 1

Describe a festival you like and explain how people celebrate during this festival. Include details and examples to support your explanation.

Preparation time: 15 seconds

Response time: 45 seconds

Sample answer

My favorite festival is the Lunar New Year. It is quite a great event in the Chinese community as well as in every individual family. On the eve of the New Year, each family has its members gather together to eat a family reunion dinner. After the meal they watch a special program on TV until the clock strikes twelve. Then every family sets off long strings of small firecrackers to welcome the new year. On the first day of the New Year, almost everyone is dressed in his or her best. When people meet on the streets, they say to each other"Happy New Year". If they meet acquaintances, they used to say, "Wish you a good bonanza" to one another. Friends and relatives make New Year calls and give presents among themselves. I like the joyful atmosphere of the Lunar New Year.

Question 2

Some people prefer traveling with others, like their friends or family members. Others like traveling on their own. How would you choose to travel and why? Include details and examples in your explanation.

Preparation time: 15 seconds

Response time: 45 seconds

Sample answer

I prefer travelling alone to joining package tours. The advantages of travelling alone are quite obvious . By travelling alone you can enjoy great freedom . There are many alternatives of transportation. You may choose to take cable cars into the mountains, or take pleasure in the process of climbing . You may take a train to appreciate the scenery on the way , or travel by plane to a faraway place. You may get up early to have a walk along the seaside, or have a good sleep. And what's more, you are always the boss who decides when to start your way, where to spend your time, or linger a little longer. You can always adjust your plan. This is much better than fitting your own plan with other members in a package tour.

Part Two

Question 3

Examinations are a key factor in school education, yet with regard to its function there have been many arguments. Read the news about a survey of students'views on examinations. You will have 45 seconds to read the news.

Begin reading now.

Reading Time: 45 seconds

Students' Views on Examinations

Sitting for exams has been the most stressful challenges for many students in Hong Kong. A survey conducted by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups last month has found that the major causes of stress in exams were the aspirations and pressures arising from parents and youngsters themselves. Of the total 534respondents, some 65 students or 12.5 percent agreed that the results in exams would determine a person's success or failure. One in every ten admitted that they had tried to cheat in exams. There are three views of examinations: radical (wanting to see the current system abolished), conservative (wanting to see it preserved),and liberal (wanting to see it reformed).

Now listen to two students as they discuss the news.

Amanda expresses her opinion of examinations. State her opinion and explain the points she gives about the importance and unimportance of examinations.

Preparation time: 30 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

From this conversation we can safely draw a conclusion that Amanda holds a doubtful attitude towards the positive effect of examinations. She claims that when a score becomes the only measurement of a student's performance, the student is forced to memorize many things without creative thinking. Therefore, examinations cannot successfully evaluate a student's true ability and aptitude and students are poorly motivated. The second reason she cites is with regard to the teachers. Since teachers have attached great importance to the results of examinations, which may also influence their own promotion or pay rise, they impose a lot of homework on their students, yet ignoring the cultivation of students' creativity. So, to some extent, examinations are harmful rather than beneficial, especially to students.

Question 4

Now read the passage about TV commercials. You will have 45 seconds to read the passage.

Begin reading now.

Reading Time: 45 seconds

TV Commercials

Very few businesses today can survive without advertising of some kind. Now,advertising has become just as essential to success as high quality personnel, efficient production and aggressive sales. TV commercials are a common means of advertising. These commercials make consumers deeply aware of the goods in the market. A great deal of the knowledge about the household goods we use and various foods we eat comes mainly from the commercials we see. Another function of commercials is that consumers are given a chance to compare products and choose the best or cheapest items. Usually the same television commercials are repeated over and over again, perhaps four or five times in one evening and for as long as half a year. Their repetition is strategic, it ensures that as many people as possible will see them, and it makes them more memorable and persuasive.

Now listen to part of a lecture on this topic.

The professor describes the reasons why television commercials are repeated so often.Explain the reasons with details.

Preparation time: 30 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

The professor offers three reasons which may account for the repetition of the same TV commercials. The first reason lies in economics. That is to say, it is much cheaper for a company to show an ad repeatedly rather than produce and show a new ad every day. The second reason is that such repetition may absorb more and more TV audience who are the potential customers, and the repetition guarantees that the audience surely see this ad. The last reason is that this repetition can make those commercials very impressive in people's minds. A considerable amount of repetition can make the ad memorable, and thus more persuasive than a single presentation. In general, the repetition of the same commercial is a good method of advertising.

Part Three

Question 5

Now listen to a conversation between a students and a teaching assistant.

The teaching assistant provides two solutions to the student's problem. Describe the student's problem. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

The student is puzzled about the elective courses, not knowing how to choose proper courses and get credits. The teaching assistant explains the two kinds of elective courses and provides two solutions to the problem of how the student should choose the courses. One is to choose more courses that are closely related to the student's major, preparing for a further study of the similar disciplines, and the other is to spend more time on those that are not related to the student's major but helpful in broadening her horizons. Personally speaking, I prefer the second one, because nowadays the society values people's miscellaneous knowledge and skills rather than special skills only in a much limited field. So, as a university student, besides studying specialized knowledge, one should spend more time on the development of miscellaneous skills.

Question 6

Now listen to part of a talk in a United States Biology class.

Using the points and examples from the talk, explain the two factors which determine an individual's intelligence.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Response time : 60 seconds

Sample answer

According to the professor, there are two important factors that influence an individual's intelligence. The first factor is the sort of brain a person is born with. Human brains differ greatly in many ways. Some brains may be more capable than others. The second factor lies in the sort of environment in which a person is brought up. The influence of environment on an individual's intelligence can be seen from the example of the twins who are raised in different environments. In the example given by the professor, the twin brothers, Peter and Mark, of course, have identical brains, but they have different IQs and performances in schools due to the different environments in which they have been brought up. This example is really convincing and powerfully proves the importance of the influence of environment on an individual's intelligence.
