Part One

Question 1

Describe a students' academic society you once joined in school and explain why the society was important to you. Include details and examples to support your explanation.

Preparation time: 15 seconds

Response time: 45 seconds

Sample answer

The most important and meaningful academic society I've joined in school is the students computer society of my university. The society holds regular lectures and seminars on computer science and technology, and has various activities related to this field. Besides, it also issues a monthly journal named Computer Lover. So the society provides a very good platform for the members to learn computer science and technology, and to communicate about it as well. I really get a lot of help from it, especially from the lectures and seminars it regularly holds. It is because of this society that I've become more and more interested in computer science and made up my mind to pursue my studies in this field in the future.

Question 2

Some people like to relax at home during a long holiday; while other people prefer to spend their holidays travelling. Which way do you prefer? Include details and examples in your explanation.

Preparation time: 15 seconds

Response time: 45 seconds

Sample answer

During a long holiday, I prefer to stay at home because of the following reasons. First, I can make good use of the time to clean my house. When I am busy with my home is a mess. The long holiday provides a good chance for me to do the cleaning. For example, I can dust all the furniture. Besides, I don't like to go out traveling because during holidays all the tourist sites are crowded with visitors. Therefore, traveling can be very tiring instead of being fun. I would rather spend the long holiday with my family at home.

Reading Time: 45 seconds

Volunteers Wanted

There will be an international conference on plant pathology organized by the Plant Pathology Society from Sept. 26th to Sept. 30th in International Convention Center. Over 400 scientists and scholars from home and abroad will gather in this conference. As the staff of the secretariat will not be enough for such a big international conference, from Sept. 22nd to the end of the conference, extra volunteers are wanted. Those who are majoring in biology or botany are very much welcome. For more details, please call Registry Office: 6875431.

Now listen to two students as they talk about the poster.

The woman successfully persuaded the man to be a volunteer in the international conference. Explain her reasons why the man should go and be a volunteer in the conference

Preparation time: 30 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

The woman explained roughly four reasons why the man should go and be a volunteer in the conference. First, for a student, it is very helpful to participate in academic lectures or conferences, from which he can learn a lot of things that are rarely heard in class or hardly seen in textbooks. This is what the woman's tutor tells her to do. Second, working as a volunteer in the international conference provides the man with a good chance to broaden his horizons in his academic study. Third, in the conference, the man can meet a lot of famous scholars in his academic field, and thus update his knowledge. Fourth, what the man will gain from the work in the conference is worth much more than the time he spends on it.

Question 4

Now read the passage about genetically modified food . You will have 45 seconds to read the passage

Begin reading now.

Reading Time: 45 seconds

Controversy over GE Food

Opinions differ greatly on the pros and cons of genetically engineered food (GE food). Supporters of GE food say that GE crops will reduce chemical inputs to the land, help the environment, increase the possibility of growing crops in difficult geographic areas, and improve nutritional qualities of food. However, the opponents of GE food say that GE crops may upset the complex environmental balance, create many new non-reversible ecological problems, and increase the dominance of major corporations and the disadvantage of small farmers, as these rich corporations will control seed varieties, at the worst, cause damage to the human immune system and cause cancer.

Now listen to part of a lecture on this topic in a genetics class.

The professor describes roughly three different attitudes toward GE food-supporting, partially supporting and opposing. Explain the reasons for each of the three attitudes.

Preparation time: 30 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

First, some people think that GE food is safe for humans and the environment and will benefit everyone , so they completely support GE food . Second , some people just support the research into GE food, for they recognire the benefits for the economic food supply in the future, but oppose the great risks that are brought about by the fast moving technology of GE food. So they take a partially supportive attitude towards GE food. Third, still other people think that GE crops may do harm to the environmental balance, cause tension between major corporations and small farmers, and cause damage to the human immune system and may even cause cancer. So they hold a completely opposing attitude toward GE food.

Part Two

Question 5

Now listen to a conversation between two students.

The students discuss two possible solutions to the woman's problem. Describe the problem. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Response time: 60 seconds

Sample answer

The woman has run out of money these days because she just paid the rent and bought a lot of things last month, so she is worrying about her meals for next month. The man provides two solutions to the woman. One is to ask her parents or relatives for some subsidy, and the other is to find a part-time job and get some pay. Personally speaking, I prefer the second solution. Because by doing a part-time job, the woman can earn some money and solve the problem on her own lest her parents or relatives know her poor situation, and in the meantime, she can also get some work experience and learn more things on the job.

Question 6

Now listen to part of a lecture in a language testing class.

Using points and examples from the talk, explain in what ways an achievement test is different from a proficiency test.

Preparation time: 20 seconds

Response time : 60 seconds

Sample answer

An achievement test is different from a proficiency test usually in two ways. Firstly, the aims are different . An achievement test is intended to show the attainment the student has reached in relation to other students at the same stage in a certain period of learning; while a proficiency test focuses on the student's ability to apply what he has learnt in actual situations. Secondly, the standards are different. An achievement test is designed based on different situations, varying from course to course or from period to period; while a proficiency test is independent of any particular course or period, but assesses the student's proficiency, or overall skills, in relation to his future needs.
