Unit 1

Listening Script

Student A: I felt really sad when I heard the news about Dr. Fairway's death. He was my favorite professor.

Student B: Me, too. I heard that he was well liked and was also quite innovative in his teaching style.

Student A: Yes, he was innovative in his teaching methods. Even though he was older than other professors, he was the first one to introduce multimedia lectures at Metro University. He also asked students to submit the reports by email.

Student B : Oh , it seems that he was a leader in adopting technology in the classroom .

Student A: Not only that. He was quite enthusiastic about gathering the latest medical information and explaining it to us

Student B : So , what you are saying is he was very enthusiastic about his lessons ?

Student A : You are right . Sometimes he got so energetic that he only ended his class when a student finally interrupted him and reminded him of the time.

Student B: A lot of professors tend to take in new theory or information quite slowly and cautiously.

Student A: Absolutely. Although Dr. Fairway's educational methods were always linked to new technology and information, he never lost human contact with his students.

Student B: You must be talking about the times students came to him for advice. In fact, he helped a friend of mine get a grant that allowed him to continue his studies.

Unit 2

Listening Script

Student A: I think the Commuter Challenge is a wonderful idea to promote environmental awareness.

Student B: Do you think so? I really don't like this idea. It is really inconvenient. What about a student or a faculty member who lives far from public transportation?

Student A:Well, the challenge is meant to make you think of options, like cycling.

Student B: You know we all have too many books to balance on a bike. It is dangerous.

Student A : How about taking a bus ?

Student B: I would have to take two buses each way, and I'd never get to my early morning class on Wednesday.Student A: Still, it's a good idea. It makes people think about ways to stop wasting oil and gas and find an alternative mode of transport. Maybe you should think about a carpool.

Student B: You mean try to share a ride into the university? No, I don't know anyone who lives near me and anyway, I don't want to be waiting around for someone when I am done classes.

Student A: Oh, well.

Student B: I resent the pressure to change my routine and for a whole week too.

Unit 3

Listening Script

Student A: Oh no, the change in the music degree core courses really disrupts my plans.

Student B: How so? It says we can take Introduction to the Theory of Music as an elective now. It's not a mandatory core course anymore.

Student A: Sure, but now they have made History of Music a required course.

Student B: That's right and I, for one, am glad. It is more useful and far more interesting too.

Student A:Not for me! Anyway,I already have the books for the other one.Plus,my friend gave me his class notes from last semester.

Student B : Well , you can still take Introduction to the Theory of Music if you want to .

Student A : No , it doesn't count for actual degree credits anymore . And , I sure am not happy about all the essays I will have to write in History of Music.

Student B : It's still easier to study music culture than stare at scales for a whole semester .

Unit 4

Listening Script

I joined the International Internship Program while I was a student at Metro University's Faculty of Economics. At the time, it offered me an excellent opportunity to work with other students interested in international economic and social development. My 6-month placement took place in Latvia, where the cold dark winter was more of an adjustment than the culture. Living mostly outside the capital, we were immersed in local life. We did have daily language classes and were asked regularly to join in community events so that we could understand the cultural ways of the locals. This helped us better understand and find solutions when our student work teams went to work with the non-governmental agencies. We entered old factories and new companies who were adapting new technology looking for better ways to operate more efficiently and competitively in the growing market economy. What surprised me most was how much I learned about myself while so far from home. In the end, I found many more similarities between our cultures than differences. When I complete my studies I will return to work with a company in Latvia.

Unit 5

Listening Script

The changes announced in the schedule for the Gower Street Library are going to affect me personally.I visit Gower Street regularly and am dependent on its books to complete my graduate coursework this semester. The newly posted hours are inconvenient. Firstly, they are closed on Mondays.Typically, this was the day where I had the most time to devote to research. Secondly, they announced that entire rooms would be closed to the public. As I am in the last phase of my research, I need access to the rare books and also the manuscripts found at the Gower Street Site in Special Collections. The Library Administration Office should really have given us much more notice of the closure so that we could prepare. I can understand the need for some closure because there has been leakage from the roof for the past two years. At the very least, they should be moving the collections in the rare books room and reference archives to temporary location My thesis is due just two weeks after the library is scheduled to reopen.

Unit 6

Listening Script

Student: All the members of the dormitory association will cooperate with the new State regulations in clearing our lounge areas, but we are not pleased with the prospect. This is a major inconvenience to us. There is no storage space where soft furniture can be kept securely. In addition the shelving was put in place to help share student resources. Each dorm floor pooled their leisure activity games and equipment in the lounge. It is also where we kept an in-house library of reference and recreational reading materials. There aren't any other common rooms in our residences that are central enough to be used as a living area. We are complying with what the fire marshal has told us to do, and we understand that he isn't personally responsible for these rules. We are hoping to find some other solutions that will give us back functional common rooms without disregarding state law.

Unit 7

Listening Script

Student:

I think it is a wonderful idea to have a nature walk event on campus. It promotes the idea that we are surrounded by nature and raises our environmental awareness. Last year was my first year on campus and I participated in the walk. It gave me a real appreciation of the variety of trees that line our walks from building to building. Often, during the course of running to classes to be on time, we forget the greenery around us. The nature walk names the various trees and plants that shade our paths or border the grass we like to sit on to relax or study on warmer days. The instructors are very knowledgeable. I have taken a botany course with Sharon and she has great passion for the unique green treasures growing right on our campus. The nature walk takes you to farther corners of the campus so it is an excellent orientation to both the living trees as well as the other resources on campus property.
