长江是亚洲最长、世界上第三长的河流。长江流经多种不同的生态系统，是诸多濒危物种的栖 息地，灌溉了中国五分之一的土地。长江流域(river basin )居住着三分之一的人口。长江在中国历史、文化和经济上起着很大的作用。长江三角洲(delta)产出多达20%的中国国民生产总值。几千年来，长江一直被用于供水、运输和工业生产。长江上还坐落着世界最大的水电站。

The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world. As a habitat for many endangered species, it flows through diverse ecosystems and irrigates one-fifth of the land in China. One out of three people in China lives in the river basin of the Yangtze River. The Yangtze River plays an important role in the history, culture and economy of China.
The Yangtze River Delta generates as much as 20% of the GNP of China. Over thousands of years, the Yangtze River has been used for water supply, transportation and industry. Besides, the world’s largest hydro-electric power station stands on the Yangtze River.
长江是the Yangtze River, 流域river basin和三角洲delta在原文已经给出。注意“国民生产总值”是GNP，GDP是“国内生产总值”。“濒危物种的栖息地”用介词短语来表达habitat for many endangered species。“灌溉”是irrigate，如果想不起来，可以用watering，water名词是水，动词是浇水。水电站是hydroelectric power plant，不会写也没有关系。就翻译角度而言，一两句不会写不影响大局，主要是句子的结构。如果你写出来的单词没有主谓宾，这才是扣分之处。
下面解析两个复杂的句子：
1. 长江流经多种不同的生态系统，是诸多濒危物种的栖息地，灌溉了中国五分之一的土地。
As a habitat for many endangered species, it flows through diverse ecosystems and irrigates one-fifth of the land in China.
翻译的难点在于中国的句子可以两个逗号一个句号，但是英文的句子句意比较复杂，最好还是拆开一句一句的翻译。“长江流经多种不同的生态系统”作为主谓宾，“长江流经多种不同的生态系统”可以和“濒危物种的栖息地”联系起来一起翻译。先写同谓语As a habitat for many endangered species。濒危物种不会写，可以写“保护动物”precious animals，或者直接写animals或者animals which are going to die(灭绝的动物)。ecosystems是生态系统，diverse是多样的，很多用various，lots of也可以。“五分之一的土地”是one-fifth of the land，有的同学可能不会写五分之一，那么1/5也可以。
2. 几千年来，长江一直被用于供水、运输和工业生产。
Over thousands of years, the Yangtze River has been used for water supply, transportation and industry.
几千年来，thousands of years前面加一个介词over。 这里是被动语态has been used，所以翻译过来非常简单。“被用于”可以用for来表达。for作为一个介词后面跟一个名词，供水的名词是water supply，有人可能不会写supply， 直接用water也可以。运输是transportation，最后一个“工业生产”用industry就可以。这句话考现在完成时和现在完成时的被动语态。
注意“三分之一的人”不要写成 a third of the population，三分之一的人口就是三个人里面有一个one out of three people。 “发挥很大作用”就是play an important role是很大的作用。第二部分的生产用generate，多达as much as 20% of the GNP for China。“坐落”可以用 locate on或者stand on。第三篇文章中的黄河是Yellow River，不是Huang River。
